Enclosed by boreal forest and complete with sandy shores, this Lakeland Country
town is one of Alberta's oldest
communities. With records dating as far back as 1798, Lac La Biche is a place
rich in history, culture and heritage. Sprawled along the southeastern shore of
Lac La Biche Lake, the community is located approximately 290 km (175 mi) directly
south of Fort McMurray. Those
travelling north from Edmonton
will need to travel about 220 km (137 mi) before reaching the town. A gateway
to more than 100 lakes, Lac La Biche is a recreational retreat that offers activities
such as hiking, camping, fishing and a myriad of water sports. The area is also
home to Sir
Winston Churchill Provincial Park, a spot renowned as one of Alberta's top
birding sites. Much of this area's history can be found at the Lac
La Biche Mission Historical Site, while the annual Pow
Wow Days festival provides the chance to celebrate this region's diverse past.
